Goosebumps

"Something is stirring Shifting ground? It's just begun. Edges are blurring All around And yesterday is done. Feel the flow Hear what's happening We're what's happening Don't you know? We're the movers and we're the shapers We're the names in tomorrow's papers Up to us man, to show 'em" ** I believe I have a new jump coach. And I'm actually excited about skating again. Once again, I skated before work on not-enough sleep. Good session, what I can recall of it. Will have more to say when I am awake and after my jump coach lesson. **Our Time from Merrily We Roll Along. Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

  1. Hi there, fellow adult skater! Man, I have been googling "adult ice skater blogs" and keep coming across abandoned ones, so I am ecstatic to finally find yours--I love your frankness and enthusiasm. And, ungh, I feel ya on the pre-work sessions. I am not and will never be a morning person: I have been doing once-a-week early morning lessons for a year now and they're still a crapshoot because I just do not function properly before noon, let alone 7:45 a.m. If you're a coffee drinker, I highly recommend becoming a coffee guzzler as your body adjusts to combat the mid-day drag.

I so hope you keep kicking ice and make the kind of progress that makes you proud af of doing something you love and doing it well. I'm super enjoying your takes on skating! <3

  2. Welcome!! Sorry it took so long to respond; work! I can't eat or drink anything before skating because it wants to make a return appearance, if you know what I mean. I don't function until about 3:00 and that's because I take a nap during lunch.

Keep skating! And start a blog too; I'll follow it. <3

  3. Aack, my turn to apologize for the delay, but it's so rad to hear back from you. I, in theory, shouldn't be doing non-work stuff at work but... meh, that's what fishing for the company Wifi password for discreet phone-surfing is for.

Heh, I feel ya on Encore Foodstuffs. I usually don't eat before skating but I do owe my continued existence to coffee. Have morning sessions gotten any easier for you? And, oooh, lunch naps sound diviiiiiiine.

I actually read a LOT more of your blog after my initial comment and... goodness, girl, you have overcome some truly maddening external obstacles in your skating journey. I think I have it rough being an adult skater but I am so disgusted (though, sadly, not surprised) that you get such flack for being an African-American skater. I want to give you the biggest freaking hug for powering through petty people's petty bullshit. You are so freaking fierce for not letting them keep you down.

I actually started a skating blog not that long ago, madonice.com. I'm having a lot of fun with it, and it's a solid tool for untangling all the messy feelings I have about this sport.

    Rock on, darlin'! <3

  4. Now it's my turn to apologize for the delay! I am following your blog and promise to comment. I can't thank you enough for the hug; it means so much to me. Knowing that someone cares makes all the other crap worth while.

Once you have been hit by the competition bug, you know there's no going back. You'll get there, believe me. And then we can meet in person!!! :) Blogs are great. Now I'm off to read yours!!

    Have an awesome sauce skate!!!
